Pope St John I

John the First was the 53rd Pope of the Catholic Church.  He was Pope during the Reign of Emperor Theodoric.  Theodoric was an Arian, and Arians did not believe in God.  When Theodoric first became Emperor he let the Catholics who believed in God live in peace; but this peace did not last long.  The Emperor started to think that everyone wanted to be an Emperor and he started not to trust people and to treat them badly.  This continued for many years until the Emperor involved Pope John I in his problems.  The Emperor was upset with the Emperor of a place called Constantinople, because he was treating the Arians in the east badly.  He sent Pope John I to go and talk to the Emperor of Constantinople to convince him to start being nicer to the Arian people.  Well, it worked and the Emperor of Constantinople decided to change how he was treating the Arian people.  Instead of being happy, Emperor Theodoric thought that Pope John I and the Emperor of Constantinople were planning to do something bad to him.  So the Emperor had Pope John I captured and thrown in jail while he was on his way back home to Rome.  The Pope died in this jail because they did not give him food or water.
