St Stephan of Hungry

Stephen was named Vajk when he was born. His father was a Prince of Hungary. When his father and mother became Christians, they also had Vajk baptized, and they gave him the baptized name of Stephen, after the first martyr of the Church. When Stephen’s father died, he took over as leader of the Hungarian people. He fought many battles to spread Christianity throughout the land and to gain more land for Hungary. Since he showed how strong and good of a leader he could be, Pope Sylvester made him the first King of Hungary in the year 1000. He was a good King and took very good care of his people; he built many new Churches and he helped the poor in his country as much as he could.
